These warrior teams work diligently to both protect the installations assigned to Marine Corps Base Hawaii as well as train for actions required in a combat environment. This presentation will highlight the ferocity of our dogs while demonstrating the trust, obedience, and skill required to perform these mission requirements.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii, located on the Makapuʻu Peninsula, includes approximately 11 nautical miles of coastline.  To support the Base mission, Waterfront Operations (WFO) provides three services: environmental response, search and rescue for Kaneohe Bay, and waterborne security.  The twenty sailors assigned to WFO provide a 24/7 presence.  During this workshop, participants will enjoy an excursion through the Bay and around Coconut Island (Gilligan's Island).  You will see Marine Corps Base from a new perspective and perhaps see some sea turtles.

Title:  "Many Faces of Mokapu, a Richly Storied Landscape," A Slide Talk by Dr. Diane Drigot, Senior Natural Resources Mgt. Specialist, Environmental Dept., MCB Hawaii

More than one million years of volcanic activity, changing sea levels and other natural forces have sculpted Mokapu’s landscape prior to and since human arrival. The different phases of human settlement on Mokapu, from Polynesian to military, have shaped the landscape as well.  This slide talk will provide a journey through time on Mokapu’s landscape—prehistoric to present—weaving human interest stories and insights from oral histories as well as scientific sources about how the many different natural and human forces have contributed to its uniquely Hawaiian “sense of place.”  Highlights of the MCB Hawaii’s award-winning conservation program will also be provided.

Title:  Field Trip:  "Ho’ola I Ka Aina (Restoring Health to The Land) at Nu’upia Ponds"

MCB Hawaii is a recognized leader in natural resources conservation.  This field trip will visit one area where these efforts are concentrated:  Nu’upia Ponds.  In addition to being an ancient Hawaiian fishpond, the Ponds today are an essential habitat for a variety of native and migratory shorebirds, seabirds, and endangered Hawaiian waterbirds—primarily Ae’o (Hawaiian stilt), the mascot of Mokapu Elementary School.  This “inside tour” will enter normally restricted pond areas for close-up observation of some unique bird species, native coastal plants, and shoreline features and learn about management undertaken to preserve and restore the uniquely Hawaiian “sense of place” these flora/fauna/features impart to MCB Hawaii.

Title:  Sustaining Bullets and Boobies at Ulupa’u Crater

MCB Hawaii hosts a critically important weapons training range at Ulupa’u Crater as well as a large nesting colony of red-footed boobies (a federally-protected seabird).  Just offshore is another large seabird colony of 12 different species on Moku Manu Island.  The Crater also hosts the oldest fossil bird bone deposit in Hawaii (400,000 years before present).  This “inside tour” will enter an area normally restricted to the general public, for close-up bird observation, explanation of how birds are protected from bullets and brushfires, and a close up view of historic Battery Pennsylvania built into the Crater during World War II to guard the coastline, from parts salvaged off the sunken USS Arizona.
