What is Joint Spouses’ Conference?

Joint Spouses’ Conference, or JSC is a non profit organization based on Oahu, Hawaii. Founded in 1995 by Army spouse Judith “Judi” Bramlett, JSC hosts an annual day-long conference for military spouses of all ranks & branches of service whose Servicemember is active duty, retired, reserves, including Gold Star spouses. The board changes over annually, allowing a different branch of service to “host” the conference, keeping the experience fresh and new each year.

Is JSC a military affiliated organization?

Although we do create partnerships with various military posts and military affiliated organizations, the Joint Spouses’ Conference is not sponsored or endorsed by the U.S. military. Rather, we are a private non profit organization for military spouses. The JSC is endorsed by our partners at the Armed Services YMCA.

What do you do at the conference?

On conference day, attendees will attend up to 4 workshops that they pre-register for. We serve lunch, host a keynote speaker, and a marketplace where attendees can learn more about local businesses and sponsors, do a little shopping, and enter to win raffle prizes. We round out the day with a fun reception and after party with entertainment, drinks, and hors d’oeuvres!

What kind of workshops does the conference offer?

Joint Spouses’ Conference hosts a wide variety of workshops each year. For 2017, just a few of the workshops we are offering include:

Stand up paddleboarding

A private tour of the USS Missouri

Homebuying 101

Craft beer pairing

Intro to photography

….and many more!

You will have about 25 different workshops to choose from on registration day. Good luck choosing!

When is the conference?

The 2017 conference is Friday, September 29, 2017 at the Neal Blaisdell Expo Center in Honolulu.

Who can attend the conference?

Any spouse with a valid military I.D. card of any status or branch of service. This includes all ranks, Gold Star spouses, and active duty, retired, or reserve servicemember spouses. You will present your military I.D. card to gain access at pre-check in or on the day of the conference.

How do I register for the conference?

Online conference registration opens on Thursday, August 31, 2017. Mark your calendar and check in with our website and Facebook page for announcements and up to date information on registration.

Is there a cost to attend?

There is a registration fee to become a conference member. Our board fundraises for months leading up to the conference in order to help subsidize the cost. The registration fee to become a conference member for 2017 will likely be in the $70-$75 range. We are still actively fundraising to assist with the cost, which will be determined on or about August 1st.

Do you offer childcare for conference attendees?

For 2017, we are not able to offer childcare. Although we strongly considered this, our board determined that the liability and legal regulations would not allow us to provide childcare for attendees. We do encourage you to seek out or plan a babysitting co-op for your children on conference day, and we will provide a list of approved home childcare providers throughout the island.

How can I help with the conference?

We’re glad you asked! Since our board is comprised of military spouses, and we all know that things can change quickly, we sometimes have board positions come available. If you are interested in volunteering without a board position, we have several opportunities available, including:

Conference host/hostess | In addition to attending the conference themselves, these volunteers assist conference attendees in getting to and from their workshops. As a benefit to this, conference hosts/hostesses receive a discounted conference ticket.

Join a committee | We have several committees who have open positions and would love your help and input! You could help with our decorating committee, our fundraising committee, our registration committee, selling t-shirts and other goodies, and more.

Day before set up crew | This will be an “all hands on deck” day, and we’ll need plenty of help in getting tables and centerpieces set, hanging and placing signs and decor, and more!

These are just a few examples. If you are interested in helping, our Volunteer Coordinator can take your skills and schedule into consideration and suggest a position for you.
